The man who robbed Jane Birkin’s cradle, wrote the musical equivalent of Lolita, and publicly proclaimed his desire to “fuck” Whitney Houston - Serge Gainsbourg, the man, the legend.

Det Gamla Landet: Music for Transcendentalists

May 11th, 2008 5:23 pm Posted by z in Reconstruction |

Just before a massive life-squelching asteroid hits Earth I will drive out to a desert plateau, throw down a blanket, open a beer and play some Det Gamla Landet.

Det Gamla Landet, a Swedish band comprised of Civil War recreationists, craft wonderfully simple songs that hark back to times when families crossed the vast expanse of America in stage coaches, surviving on rabbit and bear; risking life and limb in daring river crossings just to reach the fertile lands of Oregon. Featuring guitar, drums, accordion, as well as the most tasteful use of the banjo you will ever hear, these Swedes have created music nostalgic for simpler times without falling into parody.

Take a look at http://dgl.a-double-a.com/ for their new “unreleased” LP as well as their back catalogue. All free to download. Here is a sample track: dgl-Dom_V%E4ntar_Bakom_Kullen.mp3

It is wishful thinking to hope this band can gain the acceptance of enough of Animal Collective/Panda Bear fellating hipsters to support their alcoholism and continued output but simply a few converts will please me.

Paula Abdul Dead at 45…Cat Wears Flag Pin…Million Dead in Far off Lands

May 11th, 2008 12:08 pm Posted by z in Unsurprising |

June 19, 1962 – May 11, 2008

Choreographer, singer, and former Laker’s cheerleader Paula Abdul passed away at 3:55 AM on Sunday according to the Orange County Coroner’s Office. She was 45. Officials cited her long term battle with “Lazy Eye” as the cause of death.
Longtime friend and part time lover, Billy Zane, discovered her body at her Los Angeles home and immediately called 911. Paramedics arrived shortly thereafter but she had already passed.
A candlelight vigil is being held by stockholders outside of the offices of Purdue Pharma L.P, the makers of prescription drug Oxycontin.
Ms. Abdul‘s well publicized battle with Lazy Eye began in the summer of 2002 when her last shred of self-respect was violently put down after an attempted coup. She underwent experimental treatments in 2007 and doctors believed her condition was in remission.
She is survived by her cockerpoo Tulip.

Oh and a million or so could die in Mye…Myan…Burma

Colin Meloy: Your Tongue Upsets Me

May 10th, 2008 3:17 pm Posted by z in Mysterious Tales of the Sea |

Look man, I think your music is awesome. For a long time I was itching for some shanties, tales about some forgotten souls who lived and loved just like you and me. You scratched that itch and I am thankful. I don’t want to sound ungrateful and I know a big part of your music’s charm is the fact that you sing like one imagines a Dickens character to sing but bro, do something about your tongue. It’s unseemly watching you spread it out like a cobra poised to strike.
